United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP)

What is the UKYP?
The UKYP enables young people to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better.

UK youth parliamentRun by young people for young people, UKYP provides opportunities for 11 – 18 year olds to use their voice in creative ways to bring about social change.

There are currently over 500 elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) and Deputy Members of Youth Parliament (DMYP).

UKYP is now in its seventh year and continues to get bigger and better.

What it means to be an MYP
MYP’s meet with local decision makers to ensure the views of young people are listened to. The most important part of their job is to make sure they represent the views of young people in their constituency.

How can you become an MYP /DMYP in Barnsley?
Barnsley Youth Council is democratically elected by young people aged 11-19 in Barnsley. 3 members are elected to represent each of the nine area that Barnsley is split into. Once the youth council are elected members are then asked if they would be interested in nominating themselves for UKYP. Once members have nominated themselves an election is held within the youth council for our two MYP’s and DMYp’s.

The elected representatives then have a support group from the rest of the youth council members to help then undertake their role in UKYP and gather the views of their constituents.

The representatives from Barnsley then attend Yorkshire and Humberside Regional meetings with other MYP’s/DMYP’s from across the region. They also attend an annual National Sitting which could take place anywhere in the UK.

Here are Barnsleys elected MYP’s and DMYP’s:
