47% turnout in the Barnsley Youth Council Elections 2007


The 5th annual democratic election of the Barnsley Youth Council has just taken place. Voting started from 15th March and finished on 23rd March 2007. A total of 11, 205 votes were cast.

45 polling stations were set up across the borough throughout the day and night these were set up in schools, colleges, youth centres and other projects that young people access. 
The 67 candidates had spent the previous week campaigning in their local areas trying to encourage other young people to vote them onto one of the 19 seats available.
The Youth council is made up of 27 seats, 3 young people for each one of the 9 area forum areas.
The 5th election has been a major success as 11,205 11-19 year olds took the opportunity to vote at one of their local polling stations. This figure equates to a 47% turnout of Barnsley’s 11-19 population. 
The Barnsley Youth Council proactively and reactively work with young people around their issues and concerns and is now formally recognised as part of the political management process in Barnsley.
The Youth Council can send reports to the Council’s Cabinet and works alongside the Council’s Scrutiny Commissions.
Clare Archer Youth Council Coordinator said “ On behalf of the Youth Service and Barnsley Council I would like to say a big thank you to all the young people who have stood in the election, although only 19 candidates were elected, all the young people who took part should be extremely proud of themselves as their commitment and enthusiasm was inspirational. The young people who didn’t get elected will be invited to get involved in other groups that link to the Youth Council so that they can continue their involvement in the decision making processes in Barnsley.”

Area 8 – Terri-ann Seres, Emily Harding
Area 9 – Jamie Swift, Jacky Cheng
